AI Skill Navigator is a substantial Moodle extension with real implementation behind its feature list. The local plugin and optional course block provide tutoring, quiz and mind-map generation, assessments, adaptive review, learning-gap analysis, simulator suggestions, course building, and RAG over teacher materials. The provider layer supports prototype, OpenAI-compatible, Anthropic, Gemini, DeepSeek, Ollama, and custom HTTP configurations. Its strongest work is around responsible deployment. External AI access is disabled by default, course materials require individual approval, destructive Course Builder actions have a separate safety gate, and outbound HTTP clients reject unsafe endpoints. The Moodle Privacy API implementation covers metadata, export, and deletion, while pages generally enforce login, capabilities, and session keys.
The repository also treats community maintenance seriously. It includes beginner and standard contribution guides, a code of conduct, security reporting instructions, architecture notes, release notes, a roadmap, and a manual test checklist. CI checks PHP 8.1 through 8.3, JavaScript syntax, XMLDB structure, embedding configuration, RAG behavior, and encoding regressions. The micro-contribution workflow gives first-time contributors a small, validated entry point without mixing those changes into the main plugin logic.
The main weakness is that automated testing does not yet match the project’s size or stable maturity label. Current tests are mostly standalone PHP scripts with lightweight Moodle substitutes. They do not exercise installation, upgrades, database operations, permissions, Privacy API behavior, provider failures, or complete teacher and student flows inside Moodle. Moodle PHPUnit and Behat coverage would provide much stronger confidence. Several page controllers are also very large, including a Course Builder file exceeding 4,000 lines, which makes security review and maintenance harder. Breaking these pages into action classes, Moodle forms, renderers, and smaller services would reinforce the architecture already started under classes/service. Automated release ZIPs for the two correctly packaged plugin directories, plus moving remaining hardcoded English and Italian interface text into language files, would make installation and localization more dependable.
